United Nations Advanced Training Summer 2024: Empowering Future Global Leaders

The United Nations Advanced Training (UNAT) program, held from June 10-19, 2024, has once again proven to be an exceptional opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of international relations and global leadership. This year’s program, which took place at the UN Headquarters in New York City and various government offices in Washington, D.C., offered participants a unique blend of educational experiences, networking opportunities, and hands-on training in diplomacy and global affairs.

The UNAT participants explored the iconic UN General Assembly Hall, where global leaders gather to address the world’s most pressing issues.

Program Highlights  

Throughout the program, students were immersed in high-level briefings, workshops, and unique networking opportunities, gaining deep insights into global governance and international relations. The highlights of the program included:

  • Learning about the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Students participated in informative sessions led by UN experts on the significance and implementation of the SDGs in solving global challenges.

  • Human Rights and Environment Briefings: They engaged in specialized briefings on pressing global issues such as human rights and environmental conservation, presented by senior UN officials.

  • Visits to the Permanent Missions of Portugal, Switzerland, and Albania: These missions provided firsthand insight into how countries promote foreign policy and international cooperation through diplomacy.
  • Policy Recommendations and Workshops: Students took part in collaborative workshops, drafting policy recommendations that reflect their understanding of global issues, which were later presented to UN officials.

  • Exploration of U.S. Historical Sites: Beyond their UN experiences, participants visited iconic U.S. historical landmarks, enriching their understanding of America’s cultural heritage.

  • Exclusive U.S. Government Briefings: The program offered unique briefings at U.S. government offices with prominent figures such as U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler, Congressman Jimmy Gomez, and Congresswoman Grace Napolitano. These sessions deepened students’ knowledge of U.S. governance and legislative processes.

  • Diplomacy at the British Embassy: A briefing at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. provided participants with an insightful look into diplomatic relations and international policies.

  • A meeting with the Council of Korean Americans (CKA), where students participated in a discussion on U.S. foreign policy with Dr. Abraham Kim, CKA’s Executive Director.

This program was packed with meaningful discussions, activities, and networking opportunities that fostered leadership and collaboration among the participants. At the conclusion, students received a prestigious recommendation letter from the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), affirming their dedication to global leadership and diplomacy.

Speakers’ List

The program featured influential speakers from various sectors of the UN and international organizations. These leaders brought a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to the participants:

  • Peter Lee, Training and Education Officer at WFUNA, provided an in-depth presentation on the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), setting the tone for the program.
  • Hector Calderón, Public Information Officer at the UN, delivered an engaging briefing on peacekeeping efforts, highlighting the importance of communication in global peace operations.
  • Omar Hernandez (top row, second from the right), Senior Conference Coordinator at the UN Department of Global Communications, conducted a comprehensive session on human rights, emphasizing their centrality in UN initiatives.
  • Christina Graf (eighth from the left), Communications Manager at the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the UN, shared Switzerland’s approach to international cooperation and global peace efforts.
  • Donald Lee (fifth from the left), President of the International Movement ATD Fourth World, spoke about combating poverty and fostering dignity through global cooperation.
  • Sophie Kacki (top row, third from the left), Manager at PRME, UN Global Compact, led a discussion on how businesses can align with sustainable development goals, underscoring the private sector’s role in advancing social responsibility.

  • Arasu Jambukeswaran, Program Specialist at UNFPA, provided insights into global humanitarian operations and population development.
  • Bill Yotive, Model United Nations Coordinator at WFUNA, concluded the program with a special lecture on UN careers, inspiring participants to pursue paths in diplomacy and international governance.
