What do I need to pay for?

You will need to pay for your housing, groceries, phone service, transportation, and other necessities while you stay in the U.S. While your primary purpose should be training or an internship, you still need to be able to support yourself during the program.

Do I get paid for my work?

At the discretion of the host organization, you may be paid an annual salary, hourly wage, or monthly stipend. Although internship positions do not normally pay like full-time workers, we still negotiate with host organizations for higher pay. However, positions are non-paid for ICD: Express Interns (a short-term internship).

How can I get the most out of this internship program?

ICD: OPT Intern

Additional eligibility information

Applicants must demonstrate recent experience in the field for which they are requesting an internship or training experience.
Applicants must have related work or education within the six months prior to the program start date.
Applicants must intend to enter the United States solely for the purpose of internship or training; not to abandon non-immigrant status.
Applicants must not intend to change status while in the United States.
Applicants must be able to function in an English-speaking environment, during work and non-working hours. This must be verifiable via documentation from an educational institution, an English language test, or an interview with Stanley Prep staff.
Applicants who located their internship through recruitment agencies or other third-party organizations may not be eligible.

General Guidelines

Step 1: Request + Submit Application

Individuals: Please submit an online individual application request with an application fee. A Stanley Prep staff member will review your request and send you instructions on how to complete your application online within 2 business days. Be prepared to submit official documentation which substantiates your education and employment qualifications.

Host Organizations: Please submit your Host Organization application online with your personal login information. If you do not yet have a login, your Stanley Prep contact can provide one for you, or we will provide you with access upon receipt of your participant application request. New host organizations may submit an application request here. A Stanley Prep staff member will review your request and send you instructions on how to complete your application online within 2 business days.

Step 2: Application Evaluation

Stanley Prep evaluates your complete application and issues a sponsorship decision within approximately 4 weeks. During this step, a Stanley Prep staff member may reach out with additional questions, to schedule a phone interview, and/or schedule a host organization site visit as necessary.

Step 3: Approval

If we are able to approve the application, we will send the applicant and the supervisor an official training plan for review and signing.

1. A pre-acceptance letter issued

2. Invoice for Program Fee issued

3. Sign and submit the Training Program Agreement

5. Pay Stanley Prep program fees via wire transfer

6. Documents are proofread prior to submission to host companies

7. Begin matching process

You will be given access to our Host Organization Database and be able to apply to companies of interest
You will be notified when a potential match has been identified

8. Participate in a second interview, if necessary

A second online interview may be conducted upon request of the host company

9. Final acceptance letter issued

If placement is unsuccessful, the program fee will be refunded according to our refund policy.

2. Obtain a J-1 visa for Intern or Trainee and a J-2 visa(s) for dependent(s)

3. Arrange international and domestic transportation

4. Secure local housing in the U.S.

I had an internship at a marketing agency that worked for customers like BMW and some online shopping sites. I worked as a member in their production team. I was nervous when I first started working, as there were no other Korean people at the company. I also struggled with understanding the people at my work, even though I thought my English skills were very good. But I eventually worked through it and learned to work well as an intern. Before I came to the U.S. for this internship program, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I was exhausted both mentally and physically. What is the difference between ICD:OPT Intern and ICD:Express?

The International Career Development (ICD) program is designed for students to acquire relevant professional experience while participating in work opportunities in the U.S. ICD has helped many students to navigate their career options. Both programs are designed for students enrolled in, or have recently graduated from universities in the U.S. The difference between the programs is the program duration and the student status. ICD: OPT Intern is a 1 to 2-year program depending on the field of study, while ICD: Express is an abbreviated, 3 to 6-week version of this program, allowing students to obtain work experience during their summer or winter vacation.

How long is the processing time for ICD:OPT Intern and ICD:Express?

The approximate total processing time after submitting an application is two months. Please make every effort to apply at least two months in advance of your intended start date.

What should I expect for my preliminary interview with Stanley Prep?

The intention for the preliminary interview is for Stanley Prep to gain a clear understanding of the student’s professional goals, interests, and commitment to the program, as well as to assess the level of English proficiency. Interviews are conducted via video conference and the typical interview duration is 15-20 minutes. Students can expect questions that include but are not limited to, the following: self-introduction, the reason for interest, intention for the program, and plans after the program.

What should I expect for my interview with a prospective host organization?

Though this interview will be conducted online, students should treat this interview as they would any other. It is important to dress professionally and be prepared to discuss your qualifications. Students should be prepared to address the following, among other questions: self-introduction, the field of study and relevant experience, the reason for applying to this host organization in particular, and motivation for getting work experience in the U.S.

If my first interview is not successful, will I be matched with another host organization?

Stanley Prep will provide up to three matches, if necessary. We make every effort to accommodate the student’s preference for the first two matches. If the interview is not successful for the first two matches, the final match is made with the host organization that Stanley Prep has determined to be the best option for the student. If the third match is not successful, the matching process is discontinued and the student is issued a refund in accordance with the refund policy detailed in the Client Agreement.

If I encounter an issue at my host organization and would like to find a new placement, will Stanley Prep match me with another host organization?

If you have any issues with your host organization, you must contact Stanley Prep to discuss your concerns. Your concerns may have legal implications or simple solutions, but it is important to let us know. If the concerns have serious potential consequences, Stanley Prep will work with you to resolve the issues immediately. In such cases, Stanley Prep will re-match you with another host organization at no additional cost. If the concerns are associated with your personal preferences, Stanley Prep is unable to provide re-matching services.

[FOR ICD: Express] I want to participate in the ICD: Express. Do I need a visa?

If you are currently enrolled in a university in the U.S., you don’t need a new visa as long as you have a valid F-1 visa. For exceptional students, we are allowing overseas university students to join ICD: Express. In such case, you will first need to determine whether or not your home country participates in the Visa Waiver Program. Please visit www.travel.state.gov and refer to the “Visa Waiver Program” tab in the “U.S. Visas” section.

[FOR ICD: Express] My country participates in the Visa Waiver Program. What next?

If your country participates in the Visa Waiver Program, you will not need a visa to enter the U.S. However, you will need authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to boarding a U.S.-bound air or sea carrier. Please visit www.esta.cbp.dhs.gov to access the Official ESTA Application.

[FOR ICD: Express] My country does not participate in the Visa Waiver Program. How do I obtain a B-1 visa?

If your country does not participate in the Visa Waiver Program, you will need to obtain a Business B-1 visa. The purpose of this visa is to allow you to travel to the U.S. for short-term, unpaid training. You must complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160). Once completed, print the application form confirmation page to bring with you to your visa interview. Schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the area where you live. To learn more about what to expect at the visa interview, please refer to Question #8, as the questions asked at the J-1 visa interview and B-1 visa interview are similar. However, unlike the J-1 visa, B-1 visas cannot be used for employment purposes. For this reason, it is important that you explain that you are traveling to the U.S. for short-term, unpaid training. Please make sure to allow yourself enough time to complete the visa application and prepare all necessary documentation. Stanley Prep will provide a visa support letter upon request.

[FOR ICD: OPT Intern] Do I need a Social Security Card?

Students who do not have a Social Security number/card will need to apply for one in order to be added to the host organization’s payroll. This does not necessarily mean that they must be issued the card before they begin working at the host organization. Students can be added to their host organization’s payroll with a temporary number as long as they show the receipt of having applied for the Social Security card. Students must give the host organization their Social Security number as soon as they receive it. For information pertaining to applying for a Social Security number/card, please refer to the Social Security website.

[FOR ICD: OPT Intern] Will I receive an offer for permanent, full-time employment in the U.S. upon completing the program?

This is not guaranteed, as hiring decisions vary among organizations. However, many students engage in ICD: OPT Intern in an effort to get full-time job offers from U.S. employers. After the ICD: OPT Intern program is complete, the U.S. employer can extend a more permanent offer. If your host organization determines your work contributions to be indispensable or meaningful, the host organization may be willing to sponsor your employment (H-1B visa) or green card (Permanent Residency) to continue the professional relationship.

It is important to keep in mind that the primary purpose for a J-1 visa and for the ICD program itself is to engage in cultural exchange while obtaining professional experience that is sure to help you build your resume and provide an impressive foundation for future employment opportunities. That being said, all ICD clients are encouraged to make the most of the program experience, using it to develop and demonstrate their skills and knowledge. In some cases, this may result in the host organization extending an offer for permanent, full-time employment at the conclusion of the program.

How long can I stay in the U.S. after my program has concluded?

It is very important to exit the U.S. within the allotted grace period after your program has concluded. Staying even one day past the grace period can have detrimental effects on your standing with the U.S. government and may prevent you from being permitted entry to the U.S. for future visits.

What is the benefit of participating in one of Stanley Prep’s ICD programs?

It can be very challenging to manage studies, and job searching.
